Well here it is. it is a beast. probably one of the dumber purchases of my life but who's to say. also shown is my 10hp rotary phase converter. they don't build them like this any more. it has a 1/2hp dayton starter motor and 10hp westinghouse motor for the phase conversion
I ended up paying $340 for the saw delivered and $200 for the phase convertor . The saw cost the the guy who delivered it $150 at the auction. Its an auction I almost went to but it was over 4 hours away so I ended up with what I would have been bidding on any way and i didn't have to drive. so thats a bonus.

Much to my disappointment, 3 of the carbide teeth on my 20" blade are broken. Everything else seems to be in great shape.

From what i can tell I will easily be able to do a 30" cross cut. probably more. the motor head seems to slide nice and smooth. the 90deg stop has a lot of play in it but I don't have to use the stop. I can lock it down to any angle I want and when its locked it is LOCKED TIGHT. The height mechanism works surprisingly well. Can't wait to get it running. If I only knew how.

It is a little big for my shop, and I do feel kinda insane for wanting this but I figure if I get it all hooked up correctly The combination of the saw and converter together should be at least double what I paid for them. The down side is I am trusting all parties that everything works.

Childhood obesity rates climb at lower rate | UC Health

UC Davis researchers recommend expanded fitness testing and outreach.

After years of increases in the rates of childhood obesity, a new UC Davis study shows that the increase slowed from 2003 to 2008 among California school children.

While encouraged by the results, the authors expressed concern about a group of youngsters currently driving the increase in obesity: children under age 10.

?Children who were obese entering the fifth grade remained obese in subsequent years as well, despite improvements in school nutrition and fitness standards,? said William Bommer, professor of cardiovascular medicine at UC Davis and senior author of the study. ?And we suspect that this trend begins before kindergarten.?

Published in the February 2012 issue of the American Heart Journal, the results indicate a major turning point in efforts to reduce the impact of a chronic condition linked with a host of serious adult health issues that can begin in childhood, including heart disease, diabetes, breathing issues and some cancers.

Bommer served on a state task force that recommended standards to help protect K-12 children and teens from diseases related to sedentary living and unhealthy eating. As a result, new laws in 2005 expanded fitness programs, nutrition education and alternatives to high-fat, high-sugar foods and beverages in California schools.

Since 1996, California schools have reported to the state Department of Education the results of a variety of fitness and body composition evaluations for fifth, seventh and ninth graders. Body composition evaluations included body mass index ? or BMI ? measures, which determine if a child has a healthy weight or is overweight or obese. Data on all students from 2003 to 2008 were provided to Bommer to evaluate and gauge the success of the new standards. For the current study, he and his colleagues included data on a total of 6.3 million students for whom complete fitness test results and body composition evaluations were available.

There were some encouraging results. While childhood obesity is still on the rise (2 percent more children were overweight and obese in 2008 than in 2003), the rate of increase is slowing. National studies in prior decades showed annual increases in obesity among children and teens between 0.8 percent and 1.7 percent each year. For the current study, the rate of increase in California was an average of 0.33 percent per year.

In addition, while the results of fitness tests varied (abdominal strength and trunk extensor strength worsened overall, while upper body strength and flexibility improved overall), there was a significant increase in the percent of children with healthy aerobic capacity.

?This was particularly heartening, because cardiovascular and respiratory endurance directly correlate with reduced risks of heart disease and diabetes later in life, especially if it is maintained over time,? said Bommer.

One concern, however, was that students with lower aerobic capacity and upper body strength fitness scores and higher BMIs tended to live in counties with lower median household incomes (less than $40,000 per year) or with higher unemployment.

?We clearly need to do more to ensure that children, regardless of where they go to school, are benefiting from the recommended health standards,? said study lead author Melanie Aryana, a UC Davis researcher in cardiovascular medicine. ?Expanding efforts to ensure that all California schools have the resources they need to make healthy changes will help.?

The team?s strongest recommendation related to reducing the trend toward early onset, persistent obesity among younger school children. This generation could eventually reverse recent advances in reducing heart disease risks and mortality, according to Bommer. He advises earlier fitness testing, including during preschool, to better monitor this increase together with interventions that specifically address unhealthy weight prior to age 10.

?Our study proves that nutrition and physical activity standards can help fewer children become obese during a critical time in their lives for establishing long-term healthy habits,? said Bommer. ?But just imagine how much more we can do to reduce the impact of obesity if we are just as successful much earlier in children?s lives.?

In addition to Bommer and Aryana, Zhongmin Li, UC Davis associate professor of internal medicine, was a study co-author.

It's Not Just Fukushima: Mass Disaster Evacuations Challenge Planners

The Fukushima evacuation zone raises the issue of what would happen during an evacuation in heavily populated U.S. metropolises during a nuclear meltdown


On March 11, 2011, Japan suffered a massive earthquake and subsequent tsunami that destroyed roads, bridges, and buildings; killed nearly 16,000 people; and critically disabled three reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. By March 12, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) was already considering urging Americans within 50 miles of the stricken nuclear reactors to evacuate, given an explosion in Unit 1 that destroyed the reactor building and exposed spent nuclear fuel and other radioactive materials to the air.

"If this happened in the U.S., we would go out to 50 miles," said Bill Borchardt, NRC executive director for operations on March 17, according to transcripts of the days following the catastrophe. "That would be our evacuation recommendation."

In fact, in the U.S., more than four million Americans live within 10 miles of the 63 sites of nuclear power plants with at least one operating reactor, according to data compiled by the NRC based on the 2000 census. That number swells when the radius extends outward to 50 miles to affect more than 180 million Americans, and includes major metropolitan areas such as New York City, Philadelphia, San Diego and even West Palm Beach, Fla.

In the wake of the meltdowns in Japan and subsequent evacuations, could all these people in the U.S. be evacuatedor take some form of protective actionin time in similar circumstances?

Planning for the worst
Nuclear power plants are surrounded by two "emergency planning zones" developed out of accident analyses conducted in the 1960s and 1970s: a roughly 10-mile radius around the plant that must anticipate being exposed to a radioactive plume and a roughly 50-mile radius around the plant that must prepare for possibly being exposed to radioactive particles that drop out of a plume. "Neither are zones that are fixed and that is the absolute boundary," explains the NRC's Patricia Milligan, the senior technology advisor for preparedness and response in the Office of Nuclear Security and Incident Response. "We don't expect that [nuclear power plant operators] would stop taking action because it's at 10.5 miles. The plans are built so that 10 miles provides a reasonable basis and, if you need to expand, you could."

That is exactly what happened in the case of Fukushima. Just hours after the tsunami on March 11 the Japanese government ordered an evacuation of those living within three kilometers of the stricken nuclear reactors and suggested those living within 10 kilometers stay indoors with the windows closed. As the situation progressively worsenedand radiation hot spots were discovered farther afieldthe Japanese government expanded the evacuation order.

The goal in the zones prescribed by U.S. regulations is to avoid any radiation doses that exceed the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's "protective action guidelines" for exposure to a plume of radioactive material being released from a nuclear power plant. The U.S. rules note that evacuationor sometimes getting indoors"should normally be initiated at one rem," or 10 millisieverts. (A rem is a dosage unit of x-ray and gamma-ray radiation exposure.)Workers within a nuclear power plant can receive doses of up to 50 millisieverts per year. It takes immediate exposure to as much as two sieverts of radiation to cause sickness straightaway.

As bad as it's gotten
Rulemaking is based on the best available data. So what has been learned from previous close calls from nuclear and nonnuclear incidents alike? On March 28, 1979, the nuclear power plant at Three Mile Island in Pennsylvania suffered a partial meltdown that led to the release of radioactive materials. In the fog of confusion that surrounded the event, Pennsylvania government officials advised children and pregnant women within a five-mile radius of the facility to leave. That radius of evacuation ultimately extended some 20-miles around the plant, although the majority of local residents did not evacuate. Those who stayed were urged to remain indoors and farmers were urged to shelter their animals and feed them stored food.

Debt Consolidation | What Lenders Won't Tell You About Debt Relief ...

A recent online poll, commissioned by NEFE, found that 75 percent of U.S. adults said they had debt and 51 percent said they were worried about the amount they owed.

The poll of 2,525 people aged 18 and older was conducted online in December 2011 by Harris Interactive.

The poll demonstrated the overall debt burden people across the country are carrying and showed that while some consumers might continue their current strategies to reduce their debt this year, others might be feeling the crush of holiday credit-card spending, multiple debts or difficulty making monthly debt payments , NEFE said in a statement.

A debt consolidation loan might seem like a quick fix to solve such money woes, but the organization advised consumers to tread carefully, as new NEFE-sponsored research reveals that ads for these loans don?t disclose the total costs or the fact that the

loan might make the consumer?s financial situation even worse.

NEFE CEO Ted Beck said in the statement that advertising for debt consolidation loans often fails to mention the downsides.

?Much of the focus is placed on the ?lower? amount of monthly payments, without regard to impacts like total interest paid,? he explained.

Debt consolidation loans combine multiple debts into a single loan, typically with a longer term that results in a lower monthly payment. Stretching out the term leaves the consumer with a greater debt burden, which must be endured for a longer time.

NEFE offered this example: a five-year loan for $20,000 at a 10 percent interest rate would have a monthly payment of $425 and total interest expense of $5,496. Extending the term to 15 years would reduce the monthly payment to $215, but increase the total interest expense to $18,685. The consumer might also owe hidden fees and penalties.

?People who are burdened with debt need to carefully consider what is best for their financial situation,? Beck said. ?For some, debt consolidation loans may be a good option. But it?s important that consumers fully understand the consequences.?

Scientists investigate a newly emerging staph strain

Using genome sequencing and household surveillance, National Institutes of Health (NIH) scientists and their colleagues from Columbia University Medical Center and St. George's University of London have pieced together how a newly emerging type of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria has adapted to transmit more easily among humans. Their new study underscores the need for vigilance in surveillance of S. aureus.

A methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) strain known as livestock-associated (LA)-ST398 is a cause of severe infections in people in Europe who have close contact with swine, but the bacterium does not transmit well from person to person. More recently, a variant of LA-ST398 that presently is susceptible to methicillin has emerged as a significant cause of community-associated infections in several countries, including the United States, Canada and China. The new strain primarily infects the skin and soft tissue, but it can cause more severe disease.

Based on samples from 332 households in northern Manhattan, New York, scientists have determined that this new strain, named ST398-NM, efficiently transmits from person to person?in contrast to the transmission characteristics of the livestock-associated strain.

By analyzing and comparing the genomes of LA-ST398 and ST398-NM, the study, led by Anne-Catrin Uhlemann, M.D., Ph.D., at Columbia, charted several ways in which the bacterium has adapted to its hosts. For example, they learned that the human-adapted strain (ST398-NM) contains human-specific immune evasion genes, whereas the livestock-adapted strain does not. They also found that ST398-NM adheres well to human skin, thus increasing its ability to colonize and infect people.

The study authors say it is possible that the ST398-NM strain emerging in northern Manhattan could acquire genes making it resistant to methicillin. Scientists at the NIH National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and their colleagues plan to continue global surveillance of ST398, paying close attention to its molecular adaptations. Their work promises to inform the development of new diagnostic and surveillance strategies against this emerging pathogen.

This study on the human-adapted variant of ST398 strain complements a study that a different group of scientists published in mBio on Feb. 21. That study, also supported by NIH, focused on the evolution of the ST398 strain in livestock, including the effect of antibiotic use. Lance Price, Ph.D., and Paul Keim, Ph.D., at the Translational Genomics Research Institute in Flagstaff, Ariz., led that study with colleagues from around the world.
