EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) ? The man wanted in a deadly armored car heist at a university in western Canada that left three armed guards dead was arrested at gunpoint by U.S. border officials in Washington state, police said Saturday.

Edmonton police Supt. Bob Hassel said in a news release that Travis Baumgartner was stopped near a border crossing in Lynden, Washington, southwest of Abbotsford, British Columbia. Officials said Baumgartner was in his pickup truck and was alone.

Police said a sum of money was found in the truck when Baumgartner was arrested. Police had earlier called it a "significant" sum.

Baumgartner, 21, had been on the run since Friday when four armed guards were gunned down, three of them fatally. He faces three counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder.

Baumgartner was the fifth member of a G4S Cash Solutions crew that was re-loading bank machines at a University of Alberta mall and residence where the shooting happened, police said. The armored truck was found abandoned but running not far from the security company's offices. Dead at the scene were Michelle Shegelski , 26; Eddie Rejano, 39; and Brian Ilesic, 35.

"We're grateful to the border officials at Lynden, Washington, for their excellent work in arresting a man we believe was armed and extremely dangerous," Hassel said in a statement. Canadian police officials were on their way to the U.S. to bring Baumgartner back to Edmonton.

Employees at the nearby duty-free shop in Lynden said they watched part of the arrest from their front window. A worker who would only give her first name, Adrienne, said she saw two border patrol vehicles with lights flashing and officers standing outside with their guns drawn. She said she didn't hear any shots fired.

"It's pretty scary," she said. "Luckily nothing here happened."

Police had launched an international manhunt to find Baumgartner.

G4S Cash Solutions spokeswoman Robin Steinberg said the company would conduct its own investigation into the shooting. Baumgartner had only been on the job for three months.

"We applaud the dedication of the Edmonton Police Service, and other law enforcement agencies in apprehending Travis Baumgartner today," Steinberg said in a statement. "Our thoughts remain with the families and friends of the victims and also with the Baumgartner family."

Baumgartner's mother issued a statement Friday pleading for her son to surrender and apologizing for an argument they had.

Such shootings are rare in Canada, where residents are nervous about anything that might indicate they are moving closer to U.S. levels of gun violence. The oil boom town of Fort McMurray, Alberta, however, often has drug-related shootings, and Vancouver often has gang shootings. Gunfire at Toronto's most prominent mall this month left two dead and several injured and a shooting at an Edmonton club in 2006 left three dead.

Police said Baumgartner was driving his Ford F-150 truck with an Alberta license plate when he was arrested.

Steven Munz, a close friend of Baumgartner, had said that Baumgartner had been on the job for only three months and wanted to eventually become a police officer, but said Baumgartner didn't believe he had what it took. Munz said he had noticed a change in his personality in the last year, and that he had been irrational at times.

In a profile on the dating website Plenty of Fish, Baumgartner bills himself as an armored car guard interested in video gaming. A photo shows him shirtless holding a cell phone. He says he has a laid back personality and a "10" physique.

"I'm a great guy. We don't come around often," he writes.

But his Facebook page is much darker, quoting the character of the anarchist Joker from the movie "Dark Knight" and musing about "popping people off."

Baumgartner lived with his mother and step-sister in Sherwood Park, a bedroom community just east of Edmonton.

Just a month ago at a show in Florida, Sheryl Crow did what every singer hopes never happens: she forgot lyrics to her hit song ?Soak Up the Sun? in front of the entire audience. She quickly hid the hiccup by explaining that it was her age that hindered her memory.? What Crow didn?t reveal was that just months before she was diagnose with a brain tumor.

In a new interview with the Las Vegas Review-Journal, she opened up about her sudden forgetfulness and memory lapses.? ?I worried about my memory so much that I went and got an MRI. And I found out I have a brain tumor,? she said candidly.

?I haven?t really talked about it,? she went on to say. ?In November, I found out I have a brain tumor.? But she assured fans that it?s nothing to be worried about.? ?It?s benign, so I don?t have to worry about it. But it gives me a fit.?? She was even in high spirits while opening up about her diagnosis, having laughed with the reporter the entire time.

This isn?t Crow?s first medical rollercoaster.? In 2006, she was diagnosed with breast cancer just shortly after her split with Lance Armstrong.? After undergoing a minimally invasive surgery and rounds of radiation, the cancer went into remission.

Currently, she is focusing on releasing new music without a current record label, working with film director Barry Levinson on a musical of his 1982 debut ?Diner,? and spending time with her two kids in Nashville.

The labor dispute between the NFL and its game officials could linger into the regular season.? Which means that the league would be using replacement officials.

According to Jim Corbett of USA Today, that?s exactly what will happen.

Per Corbett, a person with knowledge of the negotiations expects the fight to escalate over the summer, and that the ?first couple of weeks? of the regular season will be officiated by ?scabs.?

?I will be very surprised if there are not games played with scabs or replacement officials,? the source said Tuesday.

Though it?s bad form to speculate on a reporter?s sources (as if that?s ever stopped me before), the source?s use of the term ?scabs? suggests that the information comes from someone tied to the NFL Referees Association.? Though the use of both ?scabs? and ?replacement officials? makes the remark come off as balanced, it?s unlikely that any league-side sources would use the inherently pejorative term.? (Unless, of course, it was a brilliant effort to cover the source?s tracks.)

If the quote came from the NFLRA, it?s unfortunate that the officials are preparing to forgo multiple game checks before working out a deal.? If the hardship of lost pay (then again, most of the officials have other jobs) will get them to blink after a few weeks, why not blink before the game potentially suffers by the use of substandard officials?? (In turn, if the NFL will blink after a couple of weeks of using second-rate-or-worse officials, why not blink before the game and the men who play it are compromised?)

Using the best officials takes on greater importance than the last time replacements/scabs were hired, because officials are now expected to help spot players who may have suffered concussions. But the NFL has yet to share any of the details with the players regarding the plan to find other officials.

?The NFL doesn?t let us know anything, unfortunately,? NFLPA president Domonique Foxworth told PFT Live on Tuesday.? ?Any information that we get from them, we have to pry it out of them.?

Foxworth deferred comment on whether the players would be reluctant to play with replacement/scab officials, stating only that, for now, ?there?s a red flag and there?s lots of concerns.?

There should be.? Whatever the NFL plans to do, it?s critical that the two sides work together.? While the NFLPA naturally may be inclined to resist the league?s proposals in deference to a fellow union, both sides need to find a way to work together, putting the greater good of the game about their own interests.

That said, the greater good of the game favors having the best officials available.? Locking out the officials who have made it to the top of their profession and replacing them necessarily means that the league won?t have the benefit of the very best.
