Recently, a mother in Ohio had her child removed from her home because of his obesity. I believe that child protective services should be able to take obese children away from their parents.

When children are being starved by their parents, it is immediately seen as a sign of abuse. I believe that childhood obesity should start to be seen in the same light. Just as children can be denied the proper amount of food, they can also be denied healthy choices in what they eat. It would be extremely difficult for a child to eat healthy if they are not given healthy food options at home.

The idea of taking children away from their parents is always a touchy subject, and this reason for removing a child from his or her household should be carefully thought through with even more sensitivity. One must take into consideration the emotional effects that removing a child from his or her parents may have. But, are these emotional effects more or less damaging than allowing the child to stay with the parents? The answer to this question will vary for every case.

Removing obese children from their homes should be considered as only a last possible option for these children. However, if parents have chosen to ignore the fact that their child is obese, they may be in need of a wake up call.

Last year's proceedings produced a classic live TV moment when "Mike & Molly" star Melissa McCarthy, who was hosting the nominations ceremony, found out she was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. In an interview with the AV Club, Offerman pondered how he might react if a similar situation presented itself this year. "I guess the first impulse would be to announce it while belching. New evidence links immune irregularities to autism, mouse study suggests

ScienceDaily (July 17, 2012) ? Scientists at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) pioneered the study of the link between irregularities in the immune system and neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism a decade ago. Since then, studies of postmortem brains and of individuals with autism, as well as epidemiological studies, have supported the correlation between alterations in the immune system and autism spectrum disorder.

What has remained unanswered, however, is whether the immune changes play a causative role in the development of the disease or are merely a side effect. Now a new Caltech study suggests that specific changes in an overactive immune system can indeed contribute to autism-like behaviors in mice, and that in some cases, this activation can be related to what a developing fetus experiences in the womb.

The results appear in a paper this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).

"We have long suspected that the immune system plays a role in the development of autism spectrum disorder," says Paul Patterson, the Anne P. and Benjamin F. Biaggini Professor of Biological Sciences at Caltech, who led the work. "In our studies of a mouse model based on an environmental risk factor for autism, we find that the immune system of the mother is a key factor in the eventual abnormal behaviors in the offspring."

The first step in the work was establishing a mouse model that tied the autism-related behaviors together with immune changes. Several large epidemiological studies -- including one that involved tracking the medical history of every person born in Denmark between 1980 and 2005 -- have found a correlation between viral infection during the first trimester of a mother's pregnancy and a higher risk for autism spectrum disorder in her child. To model this in mice, the researchers injected pregnant mothers with a viral mimic that triggered the same type of immune response a viral infection would.

"In mice, this single insult to the mother translates into autism-related behavioral abnormalities and neuropathologies in the offspring," says Elaine Hsiao, a graduate student in Patterson's lab and lead author of the PNAS paper.

The team found that the offspring exhibit the core behavioral symptoms associated with autism spectrum disorder -- repetitive or stereotyped behaviors, decreased social interactions, and impaired communication. In mice, this translates to such behaviors as compulsively burying marbles placed in their cage, excessively self grooming, choosing to spend time alone or with a toy rather than interacting with a new mouse, or vocalizing ultrasonically less often or in an altered way compared to typical mice.

Next, the researchers characterized the immune system of the offspring of mothers that had been infected and found that the offspring display a number of immune changes. Some of those changes parallel those seen in people with autism, including decreased levels of regulatory T cells, which play a key role in suppressing the immune response. Taken together, the observed immune alterations add up to an immune system in overdrive -- one that promotes inflammation.

"Remarkably, we saw these immune abnormalities in both young and adult offspring of immune-activated mothers," Hsiao says. "This tells us that a prenatal challenge can result in long-term consequences for health and development."

With the mouse model established, the group was then able to test whether the offspring's immune problems contribute to their autism-related behaviors. In the most revealing test of this hypothesis, the researchers were able to correct many of the autism-like behaviors in the offspring of immune-activated mothers by giving the offspring a bone-marrow transplant from typical mice. The normal stem cells in the transplanted bone marrow not only replenished the immune system of the host animals but altered their autism-like behavioral impairments.

The researchers emphasize that because the work was conducted in mice, the results cannot be readily extrapolated to humans, and they certainly do not suggest that bone-marrow transplants should be considered as a treatment for autism. They also have yet to establish whether it was the infusion of stem cells or the bone-marrow transplant procedure itself -- complete with irradiation -- that corrected the behaviors.

However, Patterson says, the results do suggest that immune irregularities in children could be an important target for innovative immune manipulations in addressing the behaviors associated with autism spectrum disorder. By correcting these immune problems, he says, it might be possible to ameliorate some of the classic developmental delays seen in autism.

In future studies, the researchers plan to examine the effects of highly targeted anti-inflammatory treatments on mice that display autism-related behaviors and immune changes. They are also interested in considering the gastrointestinal (GI) bacteria, or microbiota, of such mice. Coauthor Sarkis Mazmanian, a professor of biology at Caltech, has shown that gut bacteria are intimately tied to the function of the immune system. Farah Zafar, Chief Legal Officer of Tanween Qatar, for her view on the current GCC real estate market.The key to growing an economy, particularly those in the developing world, is in the ability and willingness of the legal system to enforce property rights. How do you see the situation in the GCC.
I think it is important to note that the GCC does have a comprehensive legal system with respect to property rights for all GCC nationals, whereby such national can enjoy such rights in their respective home country and similar rights in any other GCC countries. Dubai is a great example of a mature legal system being in place that will ensure a future of long-term sustainable growth. Most of the GCC countries are also following this model and are actively developing and implementing laws and regulations to govern foreign investments and foreign real estate laws to offer transparency and protection to foreign investors.
When it comes to the Middle East, there are multitudes of added layers of risk ? geopolitical, currency and compliance, to name a few: are the governments doing enough to make real estate investment attractive?
Yes, I believe they are. The governments in the GCC are all committed to making real estate investment attractive and they are all committed to developing and establishing laws and regulations to encourage foreign investment and to implement a standard of international law and compliance.
The majority of international buyers have historically seen Dubai as the best location in the Gulf to invest; do you think this will remain the case?
Dubai will always be a preferred hub for foreign investment, growth and tourism. However, many other Gulf States are keen on establishing themselves and Qatar in particular has greatly benefitted from its hosting of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. International investors will focus on Qatar as the next big thing.
Also in the UAE, Abu Dhabi now looks a good place to invest, but where do you think the ?hidden jewels??
Abu Dhabi distinguished itself from other GCC states by focusing on cultural, social and economic projects that attract a different type of foreign investor and institution. There are many hidden jewels in Abu Dhabi that are steady and sustainable and can only be discovered by the true savvy institutional investor.
Qatar and Oman have also enjoyed a certain amount of success on the international real estate stage; do you see this continuing?
Oman will continue to develop its tourism market and is one of the countries that wants to exploit eco and green tourism, which will flourish. Oman will continue to invest in its residential real estate market, as well as commercial projects such as hotels and resorts. With the vast amount of infrastructure and development projects taking place in Qatar, it is clear to see that the potential of Qatar has no bounds.
Perhaps the ?sleeping giant? in the region is Saudi Arabia; how do you see the real estate market progressing here?
The amount of real estate projects that have been launched in the Kingdom in the last two years have been at an unprecedented high ? huge projects are being launched all around the airport area in Riyadh, Jeddah, the Eastern Province and in the holy sites. This upward trend is forecasted to continue in 2012 and beyond.

Winning a Super Bowl not only will complete receiver Larry Fitzgerald?s career, but it also will distinguish him from the growing throng of big-numbers-no-titles wideouts who can?t get in to Canton without paying the admission fee.

And so, as the Cardinals prepare to face the Saints on August 5 at Fawcett Stadium, Fitzgerald will get a little extra incentive for his attempt to return at least five years after he calls it quits.

In an interview with the Hall of Fame?s website, Fitzgerald addresses the fact that two former Pitt Panthers will be inducted the day before the game: ?Curtis Martin and Chris Doleman.

And Fitzgerald even breaks out some Pitt trivia along the way.

?Though my career at Pitt lasted only two seasons, the experience left me with strong positive feelings about the city, the university, the coaches, my teammates and the great people of Pittsburgh,? Fitzgerald says, even though a loss to the Steelers in Super Bowl XLIII may have dimmed his view of the ?Burgh, just a bit. ??It was an enjoyable time in my life, and I sometimes reflect on the football program?s longstanding success. ?Our eight Hall of Famers covered every decade from the 1950s right through to the turn of the century, showing remarkable consistency. And, let?s not forget that?Joe Stydahar, a 1930s and ?40 Hall of Fame lineman, originally played for Pitt before transferring to our hated archrival, West Virginia. ?His Hall of Fame honor makes nine for Pitt, with an asterisk!?

Technically, Stydahar never played for Pitt, which is why Pitt doesn?t get credit for a ninth Hall of Famer. ?Whether Fitzgerald becomes the ninth is the bigger question.

?Every practice, every play, every series, every game of every season I?m in a chase of the pursuit of greatness,? Fitzgerald says. ??The standard has been set by the likes of?Don Hutson,?Lance Alworth,?Charley Taylor,?Jerry Rice?and?Michael Irvin. So, I just try and stay healthy, focused, productive and humble and reach for greater heights ? getting back to and winning the Super Bowl.?

If that happens, he?ll be joining the other all-time great receivers in the Hall of Fame. ?He still may make it without a championship, but it would be easier to get a bronze bust if he can flash a diamond ring.

SAN DIEGO (AP) ? There were no doppelgangers at the final panel for "Fringe" at Comic-Con, but there were plenty of tears.

"Fringe" stars Jasika Nicole, Anna Torv and Lance Reddick cried while reminiscing about their favorite scenes at the pop-culture convention Sunday.

"You can't go out and tell anybody this happened," joked a weepy Reddick after recalling a few heartfelt scenes with Nicole's character, Astrid, and her double.

"Fringe" actors Joshua Jackson and John Noble were also on hand for the panel, which kicked off with a trailer for the final installment that was filmed last season and served as a sales pitch to garner the ratings-challenged series a final bow.

"This was a testament to how much everybody loves the show," said executive producer J.H. Wyman.

The new season will jump ahead to the year 2036 when the mysterious, pale Observers have taken over the world.

After a group of female fans asked why there were no lady Observers, Wyman told the crowd that the reason would "become apparent this year." He also said he let the actors in on how the show would wrap up, a departure from past seasons when the cast was left in the dark.

"Just as much as you want the show to end well, we want the show to end well," said Jackson.

The fifth and final season of "Fringe" debuts Sept. 28.

The water pump, thermostat, and fan clutch are all very important pieces of the cooling system as well. The water pump should be changed at specific intervals to ensure it doesn?t fail. The timing belt, thermostat, and water pump should be serviced at the same time as? fluid flush. If the vehicle has high mileage, consider having a new fan clutch installed. When a fan clutch fails, it will leave the vehicle prone to overheating.

Tuning

Ensuring that every piece of a vehicle is in proper working order will reduce stress on the engine, and help prevent overheating. Having the motor oil and transmission fluid changed will reduce friction throughout the driveline and control heat levels. Having the air filter, fuel filter, and spark plugs changed will make the engine?s work easier, especially if any of these items were getting too old.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? South Korea's central bank unexpectedly lowered its key interest rate on Thursday, urgently attempting to guard Asia's fourth-largest economy against Europe's persistent debt woes and slowing growth in China.

The Bank of Korea said its policymakers cut the benchmark seven-day repurchase rate by a quarter of a percentage point to 3 percent. The decision mirrors similar moves by policymakers in Europe and China to stave off a recession but surprised most market watchers, who had forecast a rate freeze for a 13th straight month. The rate cut decision among seven policymakers was not unanimous.

"We expect the rate cut will help the South Korean economy return to a long-term growth trend," said Kim Choong-soo, Bank of Korea governor.

Without lowering borrowing costs that would boost spending among businesses and consumers, policymakers believed the actual growth in South Korea was expected to lag behind its potential, Kim added.

The central bank said that some economic indicators in the U.S. have shown signs of deterioration and that the sluggishness of economic activities in the euro zone has deepened. Economic growth in South Korea will be weaker than previously expected as exports and domestic demand, two key growth engines, both remain at low levels.

"Going forward, the committee expects the pace of global economic recovery to be more moderate than originally forecast, and judges the downside risks to growth to be intensifying further," the monetary policy committee said in a statement.

South Korea joins other central banks in monetary easing. Last week, the European Central Bank cut its key interest rate by a quarter of a percentage point to a record low in an effort to boost its sagging economy. China's central bank also lowered its key interest rate for the second time in a month.

South Korea's electronics and automaking exporters are bracing for weak demand overseas for the rest of the year. Samsung Electronics Co., the world's largest maker of televisions, mobile phones and memory chips, reported last week that its second-quarter sales fell short of market expectations.

South Korea' finance ministry said in June that it expected the economy to expand 3.3 percent this year from 2011, below an earlier forecast of 3.7 percent.

The Bank of Korea is scheduled to release its forecast on the economy on Friday.

Market analysts said the Bank of Korea is likely to further ease its monetary policy ahead of December presidential elections as its focus now seems to have moved to growth over price stability.

"The governor said lower interest rates will ease burden from household debts. He also said the country's output growth is expected to stay below its potential for a while," said analyst Yoon Yeo-sam of Daewoo Securities. "So there is an increased chance of additional rate cut."

The July rate cut was South Korea's first since February 2009, when the central bank lowered its policy rate by 50 basis points to a record low of 2 percent in the wake of global financial turmoil. The bank raised key interest rates in five steps between July 2010 and June 2011 to 3.25 percent, as low borrowing costs built up inflationary pressure.

The central bank had refrained from raising its policy rate for more than a year because worries about global economic uncertainty re-emerged with escalating public debts in Europe. But stubbornly high inflationary pressure left little room to stimulate the economy through monetary easing.

In June, growth in consumer prices eased to a 32-month low of 2.2 percent, below the Bank of Korea's median inflation target of 3 percent. That gave policymakers room to buoy economic growth without worrying about stoking inflation.

The Bank of Korea governor said the rate hike would not affect consumer prices this year, and that its impact would be negligible on the next year's consumer price index, a benchmark gauge for inflation.
