It' s Very Frustrating That The iPhone 5 Won' t Fix ... - Business Insider

?

BGR has a great list of things that you hate about your iPhone that the new iPhone won't fix.

One of them rankles me more than the others.

From BGR:

Better email client. We?re on the sixth generation of Apple?s mobile software and I still can?t drill down my inbox view so it only displays unread emails. I also still can?t mark an email as read without opening it or navigate to my sent items without backing out to the main account list, scrolling down past the inboxes and navigating through the main folders. Come on.

Exactly!

I probably spend 75% of my time on my iPhone reading and writing emails, and yet Apple's mail app is behind others on the market, especially the now-Google owned Sparrow.

Aside from the problems BGR mentions, I hate how the app forgets the email address of people I have exchanged hundreds of emails with, just because none of those emails were in the last few hundred sent or received. Even Google's web-based solution is better than that on the iPhone.

Now go read BGR's whole great list >>

Amazon: Kindle Fire has 22 percent of US market, is sold out

13 hrs.

Amazon.com Inc said on Thursday its Kindle Fire tablet computer is sold out, raising expectations that the world's largest Internet retailer will launch at least one new version of the device at an event next week.

Amazon shares hit a record high of $250 after the announcement, before paring gains to $247.37, up 25 cents on the day.

Amazon Chief Executive Jeff Bezos said the 7-inch Kindle Fire has grabbed 22 percent of U.S. tablet sales since it hit stores in November at $199, well below the price of Apple Inc's market-leading iPad.

Amazon is holding a media event on September 6 in Santa Monica, California, fueling speculation that it will launch new tablet devices.

"We have an exciting roadmap ahead," Bezos said in a news release. "We will continue to offer our customers the best hardware, the best prices, the best customer service, the best cross-platform interoperability, and the best content ecosystem."

Less than a week after Amazon's event, Apple is planning a news conference where it is expected to unveil a new version of its iPhone. However, some analysts also expect Apple to launch a smaller tablet this year to compete with the cheaper Kindle Fire.

The tablet market is among the fastest-growing sectors of the technology industry. Research firm Gartner is forecasting tablet sales almost to double this year to 118.9 million units. That has lured many of the largest technology companies.

Google Inc recently introduced a 7-inch tablet called Nexus 7, which has been selling well. Microsoft Corp is expected to launch its Surface tablet later this year. Barnes & Noble Inc's Nook tablet, introduced last autumn, has also been popular.

Amazon said only that its Kindle Fire was sold out. It did not indicate when the device would be back in stock, or how many it has sold. An Amazon representative was not immediately available for further comment.

Since the launch of the tablet last year, Amazon's top-selling products have all been digital items such as music, videos and movies, it said.

Anti-Gay Therapy Soon To be Outlawed In California

From the San Francisco Chronicle: Mental health professionals in California would be barred from practicing therapy to attempt to change the sexual orientation of minors under a bill that passed the Senate Thursday afternoon and whose fate now rests with Gov. Jerry Brown
The first-of-its-kind bill, SB1172 by Sen. Ted Lieu, D-Torrance (Los Angeles County), bars the so-called ?reparative therapy? for a person under 18 years old, even if that person?s parent or guardian consents to or asks for it.
Lieu and other Democrats who supported the measure called the therapy, which is supported by backers of the ?ex-gay? movement, ?child abuse.?
?These attempts are quackery and this kind of psychological abuse of children must stop,? Lieu said.
The bill had previously been heard by the Senate, so there was little debate, but it evoked impassioned speeches by both supporters and opponents in the Assembly earlier in the week. Republicans opposed the measure, saying it was an affront to a parent?s ability to decide what is best for his or her child.
Reparative therapy has been shown to have either no effect or is linked to negative impacts like depression in those who have undergone it, according to various studies on the practice.? http://blog.sfgate.com/nov05election/2012/08/30/legislature-sends-ex-gay-therapy-ban-to-gov-brown/
To be honest, I don't know if this kind of therapy works or not- I'm sure both sides of the issue have their strong views, just like this writer of this article who clearly shows his bias.
However, I have a problem with lawmakers deciding which therapies should be law and which ones should be criminalized.? I think there are many therapies in psychotherapy that are frauds, but it is not my place nor the place of lawmakers to decide if these therapies should be outlawed.
My guess is that this bill, if fought in Federal courts, will be found to be unconstitutional since it will be found to a violation of freedom of speech.
I'm just glad California has solved all of it's budget and pension problems, it's unemployment problems, it's poverty and foreclosure problems and it's crime problem.

Afghan president moves to replace security chiefs

(AP) ? Afghan President Hamid Karzai dismissed the national intelligence chief Wednesday, and lawmakers said he will submit nominees to replace the defense and interior ministers who were removed earlier this month by parliament.

The president is trying to shore up his shaken security team as his administration struggles to build an army and police force that can fight the Taliban as U.S. and other foreign forces begin to withdraw.

The shakeup could also set up a new showdown with the country's parliament ? which must approve the candidates ? because his reported choice for defense minister was one of the men who had been ousted by lawmakers.

Rapidly expanding the Afghan army and police is the centerpiece of the strategy to leave behind a government that can prevent the Taliban insurgents from again seizing power, more than a decade after the invasion to oust their hard-line Islamist regime for sheltering al-Qaida leaders.

But training efforts have suffered from an alarming number of U.S. and allied deaths by Afghans who turned their weapons on international counterparts.

A statement from Karzai's office Wednesday said Rahtamullah Nabil would step down as National Directorate of Security director because he had finished his two-year term.

It did not name a replacement. However, two senior Afghan officials told The Associated Press that Assadullah Khalid, the minister of tribal and border affairs, would replace Nabil.

Another official close to the president's office said the Cabinet reshuffle could also include replacing the finance minister, the attorney general and the head of the Independent Election Commission. Finance Minister Omar Zakhilwal faces allegations of corruption over large deposits in his Dubai bank account, although he denies any wrongdoing.

The three officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information.

Lawmakers dealt Karzai a blow when they voted to remove two of his top lieutenants on Aug. 4 ? Defense Minister Abdul Rahim Wardak, one of the top Afghan officials most trusted by Washington, and Interior Minister Bismullah Khan Mohammadi.

They cited past security lapses, corruption allegations and outrage at reports of Pakistani cross-border shelling as reasons for the no-confidence vote.

Karzai's office told parliament Wednesday that the president will submit names for replacements "today or tomorrow," said Abdul Qadir Qalatwal, a lawmaker from Zabul province.

One of the nominees is Mohammadi, who would become defense minister, while Deputy Interior Minister Mushtaba Patang would become interior minister, Qalatwal said.

A spokesman for Karzai, Hamid Elmi, confirmed that the president would send nominees for the defense and interior ministries, as well as for a new intelligence chief, "in the near future."

The decisions ended speculation that Karzai might defy parliament by delaying the new appointments for months, as he has done in the past in similar situations.

However, it was unclear if the lawmakers would accept Mohammadi as the new Defense Minister, since several have strongly insisted that Karzai choose a completely new roster.

"Those ministers who were rejected by the parliament will never be confirmed in another vote," said Mohammad Nahim Lalai, a lawmaker from Kandahar.

"The president cannot impose his will on the parliament. We are working on the basis of law," he said. "Less than a month ago, this minister (Mohammadi) was rejected by the parliament and now he wants to send him back as a defense minister?"

The U.S.-led coalition said the new security team will not slow down progress toward building the Afghan security forces.

"We've built a great relationship with the Afghan government," NATO spokesman Jamie Graybeal said Wednesday. "It's a relationship that reaches across various levels of the ministries and will guarantee our strategy for transformation will remain on track."

However, there has been growing concern about progress in building the Afghan national security forces that the U.S. has spent more than $22 billion to train in recent years.

Insider attacks by Afghan forces against their international trainers have been a problem for the U.S.-led military coalition for years, but they recently have become a crisis. There have been at least 33 such attacks so far this year, killing 42 coalition members, mostly Americans. Last year, there were 21 attacks, killing 35; and in 2010 there were 11 attacks with 20 deaths.

Square Launches Core Online: Earn Games Via Ads | Rock, Paper ...

By John Walker on August 29th, 2012 at 6:00 pm.

And then suddenly Hitman: Blood Money was free to play in a web browser.

Core Online, Square Enix?s foray into the world of online gaming, is a system that lets you play ad-supported HD games in your browser, where you earn gaming time by watching ads. And they?re launching it with one of the more loved Hitman games, Blood Money, along with Mini Ninjas. I have taken a look, and it?s safe to say the system is in something of a mess at the moment. But it remains an interesting idea.

It asks you for your date of birth (I hope it remembers to get me something!) and then offers you each of the game?s missions as a separate load. If you want to skip straight to the end, you can. Bearing in mind how infamously dull the first mission is, I picked mission two, A Vintage Year. And I?m informed that I?ve,

Time left: 10 minutes / Unlock ($0.49)

At 13 missions that would mean the game would cost a total of $6.37 or ?4.03. Or you can get the whole game at once for $4.99/?3.15 That?s pretty decent, albeit a slightly peculiar way of purchasing a game ? it currently costs ?6 on Steam, for instance.

Of course, it doesn?t really run in your browser at all, but rather in a Java plugin that you?re required to install to your PC first. So gone are ideas of running it on university library machines, etc. And of course my Java was out of date, so I had to update that first. It then asks for its software, the Square Enix Secure Launcher, to be installed. That?s extremely simple ? download it, run it, and the website automagically updates and offers the game.

The game runs in a window on the site, which captures your mouse cursor to prevent madness, with F12 changing things to fullscreen. And it?s a very smooth change too ? no mad flickering, no YouTube-like hesitation, but a neat, instantaneous appearance.

There?s an options menu too, and while it doesn?t give you any resolution choices, you can adjust everything else you?d want to, along with keyboard controls. There?s also the option to save and load, with a limit of seven savegames available to you.

Although oddly, choose to restart a game, and your saves are wiped. Which means there?s no option here for quitting the game and carrying on from where you were. You have to play each chapter through in as long as you can leave the tab open.

Having quit out of the chapter, and then tried to return, I?m given a popup window that tells me I can watch an ad to earn more time, with two choices, ?Remove ads? or watch one. When I click the little cross to close the window and do neither, to carry on with the remaining time it says I have, it takes me back to the chapter select. It seems I have to do one or the other.

The amount an ad earns seems to depend upon the length of the ad. So a 1.15 ad for Mini Ninjas Adventures gets me 25 minutes, while 1.11 of Mensa Academy gets me 23. 1.01 for Koozac nets 20, and 24 seconds of Game Globe lets me play for another 8 minutes. And while they?re YouTube embeds, they?ve done their best to have you watch them. I picked the Mini Ninjas, found there was no mute option, and then clicked over into this window to type these sentences, and the video stopped playing. Clever. No letting it run down quietly in the background then.

However, on a couple of occasions I?ve encountered bugs that let me skip all this. Deciding I didn?t want to watch an ad at one point, I clicked ?Cancel?, and I seemed to be credited with another 9 minutes anyway. Weird. I even had the same results when blocking ads with Chrome. The ad options never load, but even here when I clicked cancel to get rid of the eternal loading screen, I was again credited with ten more minutes play.

And this is all without ever signing into it.

Registering promised me 60 minutes of game time, but it hasn?t been added to my profile?s count. Now cancelling ads no longer let me play the game. And logging out doesn?t change that, so who knows what?s happening there.

Letting all four current adverts play to themselves as I got on with some Words With Friends on my phone, I earned a total of 76 minutes with games on the site. But if I want more than that, I?m going to have to pay. The advert window informs me I need to come back tomorrow to get any more that way.

Except, oops, I did all that while not signed in. Those 76 minutes are not in my account, and to get them there I?ll have to watch them all over again, including now a Red Bull advert in Spanish. But then, I?ve plenty of Words With Friends games on the go.

Perhaps most odd about the setup is there?s no clear way to just load up on ads from its own front page. To get to them, you have to start trying to play a game first. That seems an odd choice, rather than it being something you can opt into as you arrive at the site. Also odd is the suggestion that chapters can be purchased for 49 cents, without anywhere on the front page mentioning this. To get to this option, again you have to start trying to play (where you?ll be forced to either do this or go to the ad choices, no matter how much play time you may have), and select Remove Ads. This then lets you buy the chapter for $0.49, or the whole game for $4.99.

Mini Ninjas behaves even more strangely, by the way, presenting itself as loading within the Core site, and then taking you to Google?s Play site without asking, wanting to be installed there, then when launching briefly taking me back to Core, then straight back to Google to ask me to launch it again. Not pretty at all. Completely impossible to play.

This is launch day, and clearly there are going to be teething problems. What?s more interesting is whether people will be prepared to play games this way. Especially since they?re all pretty old games, most of which have been in very low price sales in various places on a number of occasions. Sitting through two or three adverts isn?t the most arduous of tasks, but it?s still a pain in the arse when what you want to do is just start playing a game. And you?re still stuck inside your browser, which asks questions of whether they?ll be able to port bigger, more interesting titles like Deus Ex: Human Revolution. That crazy old father Time will eventually let us know.

Antibiotic residues in sausage meat may promote pathogen survival

ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2012) ? Antibiotic residues in uncured pepperoni or salami meat are potent enough to weaken helpful bacteria that processors add to acidify the sausage to make it safe for consumption, according to a study to be published in mBio?, the online open-access journal of the American Society for Microbiology, on August 28.

Sausage manufacturers commonly inoculate sausage meat with lactic-acid-producing bacteria in an effort to control the fermentation process so that the final product is acidic enough to kill pathogens that might have existed in the raw meat. By killing the bacteria that produce lactic acid, antibiotic residues can allow pathogenic bacteria to proliferate.

Researchers at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, and University College Cork, Ireland, found that antibiotic concentrations within limits set by US and European Union (EU) regulators are high enough to slow fermentation, the process that acidifies the sausages and helps destroy foodborne pathogens like Salmonella or E. coli.

"At low concentrations and at regulatory levels set by authorities, we could see that the lactic acid bacteria are more susceptible to the antibiotics than the pathogens are," says Hanne Ingmer, of the University of Copenhagen, a researcher on the study. "So basically, we can have a situation where residual antibiotics in the meat can prevent or reduce fermentation by the lactic acid bacteria, but these concentrations do not effect survival or even multiplication of pathogens."

Antibiotics used as growth promoters or to treat disease in livestock can eventually end up in meat, and regulators in the US and EU have set limits on the concentrations of antibiotics in meat for consumption by humans. Ingmer and her colleagues set out to determine whether antibiotics falling within statutory limits might interfere with the process of fermentation in products like pepperoni, salami, or chorizo -- sausages that are fermented using lactic- acid-producing bacteria in a curing process many cultures have employed for hundreds of years. She says fermented sausages occasionally cause serious bacterial infections, but it's never been understood why that might be.

In small-scale experiments in the lab, Ingmer and her colleagues added the antibiotics oxytetracycline or erythromycin to meat inoculated with lactic-acid-producing bacteria and pathogens Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Salmonella enterica. They followed the progress of the fermentation and tracked the survival of the pathogens. Ingmer says several different starter cultures of lactic-acid-producing bacteria were sensitive to these antibiotics and hence did not acidify the sausage meat effectively -- results that could explain why people sometimes get sick from eating fermented sausage.

Ingmer says the results show antibiotics can potentially have a paradoxical effect that would increase the risk of foodborne illness: antibiotic residues reduce the effectiveness of bacteria that should make the sausages safe but don't affect the bacteria that can cause illness.

Although the results raise an alarm for the manufacture of processed meats, Ingmer stresses that it is important to conduct similar tests in manufacturing facilities. "The majority of sausages are manufactured at a commercial scale. It has to be addressed whether this is a problem in a real life facility," Ingmer says.

Manufacturers with good quality control systems can catch problems in fermentation, Ingmer says, preventing large-scale outbreaks of foodborne illness by testing the final product before it's distributed, but random batch testing could well miss a batch that didn't ferment properly, putting the public at risk.

How can we be sure antibiotic residues don't interfere with the safety of these products? Ingmer sees two possible solutions. If antibiotics are present in meat, boosting the survival and activity of the lactic-acid-producing bacteria is important. In the future, Ingmer hopes to work with manufacturers to develop cultures of lactic-acid-producing bacteria that tolerate low levels of antibiotics.

But the ultimate solution to the problem of antibiotics in meat may be harder to achieve. "The obvious solution is to eliminate the use of antibiotics as growth promoters and closely monitor the use of antibiotics in treating farm animal diseases," Ingmer says. The European Union and other countries have banned the use of antibiotics in livestock as growth promoters, Ingmer points out, a move the US is unlikely to follow very soon.

Artur Davis and the Crossover?s Appeal

Academics don?t usually bring convention audiences to their feet. But in 1984, Jeane Kirkpatrick took the podium at the Reunion Arena in Dallas and gave a stem-winder. Then 61 and the author of scholarly treatises on dictatorships and presidential nominations, she was an unlikely orator. She was not only the ambassador to the United Nations but also a Democrat, and, as she duly noted to great applause, this was her first Republican convention.

Kirkpatrick then tore into her party, dubbing its members the ?San Francisco Democrats??that is, appeasing peaceniks. Their foreign policy was more like an ?ostrich than a dove,? she said, declaring that Democrats buried their ?heads in the sand.? The crowd loved it. Part of it was her delivery, but a lot of it had to do with her crossover appeal.

The implicit message is subtle and powerful: Your nominee?s a winner. Even people in the other party like him. The other party has gone off the rails, and anyone with common sense is going to switch sides.

Sure, organizations of crossover voters are common: Democrats for Willkie in 1940, for instance, or Republicans for Johnson in ?64. But there?s nothing like a speaker from the opposite party to bring it home.

That dynamic will be on display on Tuesday night when Artur Davis, the former Democratic House member from Alabama, takes the stage at the GOP convention. Back in 2008, he seconded Obama?s nomination, and he crossed paths with the president even earlier, at Harvard Law School. But Davis was not a fall-in-line Democrat. He bucked the president on the administration?s signature health care law, and his conversion to the Republican Party was surprising but not entirely shocking.

So Davis, who has indicated he won?t talk about race in his speech, is in a unique position to make the case for Romney and to reach out to Obama supporters whom the GOP has to win over this time if Romney is to win. Davis can make an intellectual argument; his race, even if he doesn?t bring it up, makes a tacit argument, too: Hey, I?m not with the other guy any more, and there?s nothing racist about that.

Charlie Crist, the former GOP governor of Florida, will try the same thing for the Democrats in Charlotte. Like Lieberman, he lost his party?s primary and still won office, but the experience ratified his centrist inclinations.

But even though crossover speakers have their convention appeal, it?s not clear that they can deliver votes. In 2008, Democratic Sen. Joe Lieberman backed John McCain at the Republican National Convention in Minneapolis-St. Paul. But during the fall campaign, Lieberman was only a modest and not especially powerful surrogate for McCain.

In 2004, Zell Miller might have taken it too far. The Democratic senator from Georgia was tapped to be keynote speaker at the Republican National Convention in New York, where he ripped into his party?s candidate, Sen. John Kerry. ?This is the man who wants to be the commander in chief of our U.S. armed forces? U.S. forces armed with what? Spitballs?? The tirade was a hit in the hall, but Miller?s stern manner made Dick Cheney seem like a comedian. Miller was not a surrogate on a par with Kirkpatrick.

Other crossover speakers have simply been forgotten. A speech backing Obama by former Rep. Jim Leach, a Republican from Iowa, was far less memorable than, say, Colin Powell?s Meet the Press appearance in the fall of 2008, where he announced that after long deliberation he would back Obama. Sometimes a quiet statement is louder than a convention speech.

How To Deliver Your Promise - Building A Better Workplace

The sign on the front of the historic house turned restaurant read, ?Fine dining.? We took our seats in eager anticipation.

?? and it's served with a Vurblonk Sauce,? exclaimed our server to describe one of the dishes.

Assuming the sauce was a house specialty, I asked her to describe what a Vurblonk Sauce was.

?It's a white wine sauce,? she offered.

And then it hit me. ?Oh, you mean a 'vin-blanc' sauce.?

?Um, yeah. I'm not French,? she shrugged.

?Fine dining? may have described the food but not the experience. How often do businesses do that: make a promise to their customers and fall short because of a lack of communication with those who communicate directly with their cash-flow?

It is essential that front-line staff are educated, motivated and own the corporate mission. Otherwise, there's a let-down for both the employee and the customer.

Front-line managers, you have only ONE job: serve your staff so they may serve your customers. Communicate. Talk. Coach. Ask. Motivate. Inspire. Troubleshoot. Teach. And when you think they finally have it, do it again. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat.

The more you engage your staff, the more likely they are to engage us ? your customers. But never assume that saying it once is enough. It rarely ever is.

The Power of Inspirational Stories | Bemads Blog

You may remember the Chicken Soup for the Soul series of books that went on to cover many different subjects, offering inspirational stories that many found to be uplifting and positive. Some that have never read this do not understand the power of these types of stories. Life is hard, and often the news is filled with nothing but negative stories that make people wonder if anything will ever be okay again. Sometimes, you need some positive stories to remind you that good people still exist and that there is a reason to look on the bright side.

Inspirational stories can come from anywhere. If you have ever had one of your own to share, you may understand how a simple story about hope, giving, love, or a miracle can really change how someone feels. It can even change how someone lives their life if they hear inspirational stories that they can personally relate to their lives or the people that they know. These stories do not have to be long and winded, they just have to be positive. Sometimes the best stories are the short ones that are easy to remember in detail.

You probably have your own inspirational stories in your life, even if you are not remembering them the right way. There are always small moments in anyone?s life that give hope and understanding, even if they don?t seem to be that way at first. We often forget to wait for the end of the story. Inspirational stories often start out as horror stories, and the inspiration comes at the end when a miracle happens. This miracle can be a hero who steps in, an unexpected turn of good luck, or when a person chooses to do something that most would not. Think back to see if you have any of these stories of your own.

If you have not heard any inspirational stories lately, it might be because you have not been listening. Everyone you know has a good story to tell, but they may not tell them very often. It can be hard to ask someone to tell you a good story, but they have them. If you are feeling down and have not been yourself, they may come up with inspirational stories to tell you even when you do not ask for them. Good friends sense when you are down, and this is how they may chose to try to help you.

You can find nice, inspirational stories everywhere. There are some on the news, but you have to sit though tons of negative stories to get to just one nice one. Instead, look for web sites online that offer you this type of story. You can also find many great books that are full of inspirational stories, with the Chicken Soup series being just one of the options you have. There are plenty of great books that you can read over and over again when you need to feel uplifted, and they make great gifts too.

'Cyborg': Growing artificial tissues with embedded nanoscale sensors

ScienceDaily (Aug. 26, 2012) ? A multi-institutional research team has developed a method for embedding networks of biocompatible nanoscale wires within engineered tissues. These networks -- which mark the first time that electronics and tissue have been truly merged in 3D -- allow direct tissue sensing and potentially stimulation, a potential boon for development of engineered tissues that incorporate capabilities for monitoring and stimulation, and of devices for screening new drugs.

The researcher team -- led by Daniel Kohane, MD, PhD, in the Department of Anesthesia at Boston Children's Hospital; Charles M. Lieber, PhD, at Harvard University; and Robert Langer, ScD, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology -- reported their work online on August 26 in Nature Materials.

One of the major challenges in developing bioengineered tissues is creating systems to sense what is going on (e.g., chemically, electrically) within a tissue after it has been grown and/or implanted. Similarly, researchers have struggled to develop methods to directly stimulate engineered tissues and measure cellular reactions.

"In the body, the autonomic nervous system keeps track of pH, chemistry, oxygen and other factors, and triggers responses as needed," Kohane explained. "We need to be able to mimic the kind of intrinsic feedback loops the body has evolved in order to maintain fine control at the cellular and tissue level."

With the autonomic nervous system as inspiration, a postdoctoral fellow in the Kohane lab, Bozhi Tian, PhD, and his collaborators built mesh-like networks of nanoscale silicon wires -- about 80 nm in diameter -- shaped like flat planes or in a "cotton-candy"-like reticular conformation. The networks were porous enough to allow the team to seed them with cells and encourage those cells to grow in 3D cultures.

"Previous efforts to create bioengineered sensing networks have focused on 2D layouts, where culture cells grow on top of electronic components, or on conformal layouts where probes are placed on tissue surfaces," said Tian. "It is desirable to have an accurate picture of cellular behavior within the 3D structure of a tissue, and it is also important to have nanoscale probes to avoid disruption of either cellular or tissue architecture."

"The current methods we have for monitoring or interacting with living systems are limited," said Lieber. "We can use electrodes to measure activity in cells or tissue, but that damages them. With this technology, for the first time, we can work at the same scale as the unit of biological system without interrupting it. Ultimately, this is about merging tissue with electronics in a way that it becomes difficult to determine where the tissue ends and the electronics begin."

"Thus far, this is the closest we've come to incorporating into engineered tissues electronic components near the size of structures of the extracellular matrix that surrounds cells within tissues," Kohane added.

Using heart and nerve cells as their source material and a selection of biocompatible coatings, the team successfully engineered tissues containing embedded nanoscale networks without affecting the cells' viability or activity. Via the networks, the researchers could detect electrical signals generated by cells deep within the engineered tissues, as well as measure changes in those signals in response to cardio- or neurostimulating drugs.

Lastly, the team demonstrated that they could construct bioengineered blood vessels with embedded networks and use those networks to measure pH changes within and outside the vessels -- as would be seen in response to inflammation, ischemia and other biochemical or cellular environments.

"This technology could turn some basic principles of bioengineering on their head," Kohane said. "Most of the time, for instance, your goal is to create scaffolds on which to grow tissues and then have those scaffolds degrade and dissolve away. Here, the scaffold stays, and actually plays an active role."

The team members see multiple future applications for this technology, from hybrid bioengineered "cyborg" tissues that sense changes within the body and trigger responses (e.g., drug release, electrical stimulation) from other implanted therapeutic or diagnostic devices, to development of "lab-on-a-chip" systems that would use engineered tissues for screening of drug libraries.

Independent Book Stores

Some Tidbits, Dos and Don?ts

During my Best Seller Blueprint Program I read an excerpt from an article Steve Harrison (marketing expert) wrote for his Book Marketing Update. It was titled, ?How to Market Your Book to Independent Bookstores?. ?In his writings he mentions how lucrative a small independent book store could be for an author, but also indicates how authors need to make bigger efforts to get shelf space in an indie book store these days. Since Borders closed, a bit of that business has flowed out to the Independent stores.? According to Michael Powell in this article, founder and president of Powell?s Books, a highly successful bookseller in the US; authors make a mistake when they do not have their books available at regional or national distribution centers.?

Independent book stores like to order from those distribution centers because those distribution centers fit with their shipping, inventory, and billing systems.? The article goes on to say that in the case of self published authors, independent book stores won?t bother to seek out their books if it is too difficult for them to order.? They like the idea of one shipment from the distributor, rather than a bunch of little shipments with a whole pile of separate invoices from separate authors.? One Independent book store owner from West Chester PA, stated that she liked ordering from the distributors because they can get her what she wants in the way of a book shipment the next day.

Independent book store owners indicate that books that are self published, or books from a small publisher that are carried by a wholesaler are easier for the small independent book stores to order from.? They prefer that there isn?t a separate invoice, and order system for them to deal with.? Getting that one shipment makes it easier for the indie book store.? The easier it is to acquire your book, the more likely the independent book store is to stock your book.

The very large distributors like Ingram and Baker&Taylor don?t usually buy from self published authors.? A better way to go for your distribution would be to sign on with distributors that specialize in independent publishers or a regional book distribution co.? The article listed and stated? well-regarded distributors include: Independent Publishers Group; National Book Network; Greenleaf Book Group; Partners Publishers Group and Publishers Group West. To contact these distributors, information can be researched at the (IBPA) Independent Book Publishers Association.? www.ibpa-online.org/pubresources/distribute.ospx

Independent book store owners in this article explained how important it is to be professional; to remember to conduct yourself in a professional fashion when dealing with them.? They are not happy when their phone calls or e-mails are not returned in a timely manner. They like when you make an appointment to speak with them.? They do not like when you stop by and interrupt them.? They usually have a rather small staff, that requires their time for business, and they expect to be treated with professional respect. Showing up on time for your appointment, returning their phone calls and e-mails in a timely manner, and dressing professionally, will all help you to better deal with Independent book stores.? Good Luck!

Most Americans say the rich don't pay enough taxes

WASHINGTON (AP) ? As the income gap between rich and poor widens, a majority of Americans say the growing divide is bad for the country and believe that wealthy people are paying too little in taxes, according to a new survey.

The poll released Monday by the Pew Research Center points to a particular challenge for Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, whose party's policies are viewed by a wide majority as favoring the rich over the middle class and poor.

The poll found that many Americans believe rich people to be intelligent and hardworking but also greedy and less honest than the average American. Nearly six in 10, or 58 percent, say the rich don't pay enough in taxes, while 26 percent believe the rich pay their fair share and 8 percent say they pay too much.

Even among those who describe themselves as "upper class" or "upper middle class," more than half ? or 52 percent ? said upper-income Americans don't pay enough in taxes; only 10 percent said they paid too much. This upper tier was more likely to say they are more financially secure now than 10 years ago ? 62 percent, compared to 44 percent for those who identified themselves as middle class and 29 percent for the lower class. They are less likely to report problems in paying rent or mortgage, losing a job, paying for medical care or other bills and cutting back on household expenses.

The findings come at the start of this week's Republican National Convention and as both Romney and President Barack Obama seek to appeal to a broad swath of financially struggling voters who identify as middle class. Romney supports an extension of Bush-era tax cuts for everyone including the wealthiest 2 percent, and says his policies will benefit the middle class by boosting the economy and creating jobs.

"The fact that Romney may be viewed as wealthy doesn't necessarily pose problems for his candidacy," said Kim Parker, associate director of Pew Social & Demographic Trends, noting that people see the wealthy as having both positive and negative attributes. "The challenge for Romney lies more in the fact that large majorities say if he is elected president, his policies would likely benefit the wealthy."

The results reinforce a tide of recent economic data showing a widening economic divide. America's middle class has been shrinking in the stagnant economy and poverty is now approaching 1960s highs, while wealth concentrates at the top. A separate Pew survey earlier this year found that tensions between the rich and poor were increasing and at their most intense level in nearly a quarter-century.

In fact, well-off people do shoulder a big share of the tax burden. Though households earning over $1 million annually comprise just 0.3 percent of all taxpayers, they pay 20 percent of all federal taxes the government is projected to collect this year, according to the Tax Policy Center, a nonpartisan group that studies tax policy. The figures included income, payroll and estate taxes. In contrast, households earning $50,000 to $75,000 a year accounted for 12 percent of taxpayers and contributed 9 percent of federal taxes, the center's data showed. Some 46 percent of households pay no federal income tax at all, although they do pay payroll, excise and other taxes.

The American income tax system has long been designed to be progressive, meaning higher earners are expected to pay a greater share of their income than those making less.

In this year's tax battle in Washington, Obama wants to let the current top rate of 35 percent for high earners rise to 39.6 percent next year. Congressional Republicans would reduce the top rate to 25 percent, while Romney would reduce it to 28 percent. Romney and GOP lawmakers have said they would eliminate some deductions to pay for the rate reductions, but have not specified which ones.

According to Pew's latest findings, about 63 percent of Americans say the GOP favors the rich over the middle class and poor, and 71 percent say Romney's election would be good for wealthy people. A smaller share, 20 percent, says the same about the Democratic Party. More Americans ? 60 percent ? say if Obama is re-elected his policies will benefit the poor, while half say they'll help the middle class and 37 percent say they'll boost the wealthy.

"The Great Recession was not an equal opportunity disemployer," said Sheldon Danziger, a public policy professor at the University of Michigan who describes the gap between rich and poor as the widest in decades. "College graduates, whites and middle-aged workers had fewer and shorter layoffs than high school graduates, blacks, Hispanics and younger workers. And, only a small percentage of the rich work in the hardest-hit industries, like construction and manufacturing."

About 65 percent of Americans say the gap between rich and poor has gotten wider in the past decade, while 20 percent believe it has stayed the same and 7 percent say the gap has gotten smaller. Separately, 57 percent say a widening income gap is a bad thing for society; just 3 percent say it is a good thing.

Asked to estimate how much a family of four would need to earn to be considered wealthy in their area, the median amount given by survey respondents was $150,000. For middle class, the median amount was $70,000.

Many Americans see rich people as more likely to be intelligent (43 percent) and hardworking (42 percent) than average Americans. But the rich are also seen as more likely to be greedy (55 percent). Thirty-four percent of those surveyed say the rich are less likely to be honest than the average person; just 12 percent say the rich are more likely to be honest.

The Pew survey involved telephone interviews with 2,508 adults conducted from July 16 to 26. It has a margin of error of 2.8 percentage points.
