Super Bowl Parties with Food Allergies | Ganz Parent Club

Over 100 Million Americans and millions more people around the world will once again gather for their annual Super Bowl parties.? For many, this event is a good excuse to call time-out on that New Years weight loss resolution and enjoy the social gathering with friends and family.? For families with severe food allergies and food sensitivities like Celiac?s disease, this night is another social event that both the host and the guests struggle with.

As a host or guest, if food allergies are on your game day roster, here are some tips to get you through the game.

Communication: Before you set your menu, an open discussion with the allergic guest, or with your host will set you both up to succeed in finding safe options that work for both parties.? Everyone is different in how they decide to manage their allergies so it is best to just ask what will work for them.

Some questions to ask are?

  • Are you comfortable if the allergen is present or being served or is it best to put any food with the allergen away?
  • Are you concerned about the presence of the allergen in my kitchen?
  • What can I do to make you comfortable in my home?
  • For the guest?ask if the host minds if you bring your own food or if the allergy is severe, ask the host to remove all foods with the allergen in it.

Calling an Audible (football term for last minute change): Depending on the allergy and if they are young children or adults, you will likely want to change the menu items if you have any doubts.? There are many great food companies that label for the top 8 allergens.? Companies like Kraft, General Mills and Pepperidge Farms will label for allergens.? Check with your allergic guest or host before buying.

A Clean Slate: If you are hosting, it?s always a good idea to put away the foods that are of concern for the allergic guests and wiping the counters.? Even a very small amount or crumb of that allergen could cause a trip to the hospital, where the Super Bowl isn?t typically televised.

The Kick Off: ?Don?t sweat it if the allergic guest shows up with back-up food?they may not be used to getting out much and trusting others with their lives or may have had a past bad experience.

Medication:? If you?ve got an EpiPen?let?s bring them people.? They won?t do you any good in the car or at home!!!

Our Family?s Approach:? When we go to parties, we bring our own food, or order take out from one of our trusted AllerDine rated restaurants, and ask for the allergen to not be served.? Items with a ?May Contain? statement are ok for us, as we perceive the risk to be low as long as our allergic kids don?t eat it.?? We do ask for the areas to be wiped down as residue and the occasional sesame seed (one of our allergies) always seems to linger.

Fun! The Super Bowl is always such a great social event. ?Enjoy the game, the half-time show, the great commercials and of course the food.
