Top 5 Ways to Heat your Home Without Raising the Thermostat ...

It?s getting to the end of September now, and that means a couple of things. First, the leaves are about to change, costumes are about to be made, and before we know it the first snow will be falling. That can be a troubling prospect for our wallets and some families will go as long as possible without turning on their heat to save money. That is a noble idea, it reduces your carbon footprint and you?ll have a fatter wallet come spring-time. So, in the spirit of this commitment, here are some ways to maximize the heat generated in your home without relying on a furnace.

Praise the Sun! The sun heats the world all the time, there?s no reasons we can?t use it to warm our home in the winter months. You don?t even need to use solar panels either, just open your curtains during the day. Let the sun into your home and harness its power.

Cook at Home! In the summer time it is recommended to limit your use of the oven and stove because these appliances generate a lot of excess heat. Well, what better time to use that than this fall and winter. Bake cookies or brew some hot chocolate on particularly cold nights. A combination of excess heat from the oven and a nice hot drink will keep you toasty on even the worst of times. Your waistline may not thank you, but your extremities will.

Be Social! Body heat can be harnessed to heat a home. Just invite the neighbors over for hot cider and a pot luck dinner. Not only will it be fun, but the crowd will warm up the room in no time.

Be Active! Sitting on the couch under a blanket can be nice and warm, but sometime it just isn?t enough. Instead of reaching for that thermostat, get up and get moving! How about cleaning the house, or running on that treadmill? Your waistline will thank you for this one!

Use Free Heat Where you Can! Over the summer some people will head to the mall or the movie theater to take advantage of the free air conditioning, well why not take advantage of the free heat! Get out of the house and enjoy the evening. Go out to dinner or go see a movie when it is just too cold in your house to sit around. Remember to add an extra blanket or two when you head to bed.
